The sonnes passynge sheweth fere

Poem (Canso):

The sonnes passynge sheweth fere
Upon this cold and shiten londe.
The sonnes peyne is grete to bere
But riseth he at Goddes honde.

Translation:

The sun’s travel (the son’s passing/Jesus’ death) shows far/fear/beauty (fair)
Upon/across this cold and defiled/foul/forsaken land.
The sun’s (son’s) pain/burden/task is great/difficult to bear
But the sun rises for that task at God’s hand/command. / But it takes him (the son) up to (sit at) God’s hand.
